Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia
In Malaysia and all over the world, the Muslims celebrate Hari Raya. Hari means Day and Raya means Celebration.
Name: Hari Raya Aidilfitri
Date of celebration: 1st of Syawal (the 10th month in Muslim Calendar)
Purpose of celebration: Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated every year, marks the end of fasting month which is in the month of Ramadhan.
During Ramadhan, people take the opportunity selling variety of foods at bazaars and these bazaars usually fill with people buying foods for berbuka or breaking their fasting.
Activities: Sending Hari Raya cards to friends and relatives during Ramadhan, visiting family and relatives, ask for forgiveness to restore harmonious relationships, usually children play with firecrackers, open houses, visiting the graveyard and recite doa/prayers for those who have passed. Those who come to visit will be served with assortments of traditional/modern biscuits. Oil lamps will be lit along the path, children will be given token sums of money by the elders, zakat will be paid usually by fathers in the month of Ramadhan and the zakat (in the form of money) will be distributed to the less fortunate or the needy. The man will be wearing baju Melayu and the woman will wear traditional baju kurung.
